London 12 January 2023 – CryptoUK, the trusted voice of the UK crypto industry, has
today announced the appointment of Ioana Surpateanu as its new non-executive
director (NED).

Ms Surpateanu, who has had a distinguished career in senior finance and political roles as well as across the crypto industry, said of her new role: ‘I’m extremely excited about joining Crypto UK. I will focus on ensuring that UK policymakers and regulators are equipped with the necessary knowledge and tools to allow for a smooth and swift maturing of innovations such as the Open Metaverse, Decentralised Autonomous Organisations, Web3 economies and nextgen DeFi protocols.’

‘Crypto can become emblematic for a novel economic and cultural ecosystem in the UK if the right development parameters are implemented.’

Ms Surpateanu’s first job was in the political department of the Israeli Embassy in Bucharest before joining the European People’s Party Group (EPP) in the European Parliament as Chief Advisor for the Working Group on Budget and Structural Policies and Head of Cabinet for one of the ten Vice Presidents of the EPP. She was involved in EU budget negotiations and the inception of the European Fund for Strategic Investments, which was the first EU level initiative designed to promote investments in digital infrastructure and innovation.

Ms Surpateanu moved next to Citigroup where she was Co-Head of European Government Affairs, a role she adjusted to focus exclusively on promoting crypto within EU level regulatory and policymaking environments as well as across various business lines at Citi. She left in 2021 to become Chief Strategy Officer for the DIA Association, an open source oracle provider. While at DIA, she became an Executive Board Member of the Multichain Asset Managers Association, advocating for the expansion of blockchain based asset management initiatives.

Ms Surpateanu currently supports multiple projects in crypto and Web3 and holds a variety of roles such as Chief Innovation Officer with Swash, a data monetisation platform and the largest data union in Web3, as an Advisor for Metalinq, a Layer 3 interoperability protocol and as an Executive Board Member for both The Block Space, a Web 3.0 education platform, and the Multichain Asset Managers Association.

She has also mentored more than 100 projects covering DeFi infrastructure, digital fashion, metaverse and web3 gaming, and holds two MA degrees from the University of Bucharest and the University of Tel Aviv respectively, along with a BA in Political Science and History from the University of Craiova.
